Common Inquiries

Answers to questions we receive with enough frequency to warrant a documented response.

What does "R5" stand for?
R5 represents a framework of five foundational pillars guiding the future of sustainable technical leadership. Specific pillar definitions may evolve annually to reflect the current strategic environment.
Is this affiliated with any major technology company?
R5 Summit is an independent community-driven initiative informed by industry-adjacent experiences. We maintain no formal affiliation with any major technology company, though several of our speakers have previously worked at or near them.
Will sessions be recorded?
Select sessions may be captured for future asynchronous engagement pending presenter alignment. Session recordings, if produced, will be made available within 6–8 weeks or whenever editing resources become available.
Where is "Mountain View Adjacent"?
Mountain View Adjacent refers to the general geographic zone within reasonable proximity to Mountain View, CA. Venue details will be shared with registered attendees pending final location confirmation.
What is the refund policy?
Refund requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis using a framework we are currently finalizing. Transfers to a colleague are permitted with written notice and informal alignment from your organization.
Is there a conference app?
An R5 Summit mobile application is under consideration pending vendor selection and UX alignment. In the interim, the schedule is available on this site and will be printed in the program booklet (pending printing procurement).
What meals are included?
Lunch is provided on all three conference days pending procurement alignment. Morning beverages are provided by our Beverage Optimization Sponsor. Dinner on Day 1 is self-organized pending group interest and calendar availability.
Are workshops included with registration?
Workshops are included with Practitioner and Strategic tickets. General admission ticket holders may attend workshops on a space-available basis, where "space-available" is defined at the workshop leader's discretion.
Is there a dress code?
R5 Summit is a come-as-you-are environment. Business casual is not required but may emerge organically. Conference merchandise is available and encouraged.
Will there be childcare?
Childcare options are being explored in partnership with a to-be-determined vendor. Parents are encouraged to contact us to signal demand, which will inform the procurement decision.
Can I present a poster or demo?
A poster session is planned for Day 2, pending venue floor plan confirmation. Demo requests should be submitted via the CFP form with a note indicating demo intent. All demos are subject to content review and A/V compatibility assessment.
How do I get a speaker invitation?
The R5 Summit program committee accepts proposals via our Call for Papers. Speakers are selected based on topic relevance, abstract clarity, and perceived alignment with the year's thematic direction. Being a former interim lead is not required but is viewed favorably.

Code of Conduct

The R5 Summit is committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and moderately optimized environment for all attendees regardless of platform preference, editor configuration, organizational topology, or preferred standup cadence.

Participants are expected to:

  • Assume positive intent in all synchronous and asynchronous interactions
  • Avoid excessive solutionizing during open-ended alignment sessions
  • Respect asynchronous boundaries and response time preferences
  • Refrain from live-refactoring another attendee's demo without verbal consent
  • Use inclusive language across all communication channels and sticky notes
  • Not claim ownership of ideas generated during group facilitation exercises
  • Limit unsolicited feedback to contexts where feedback has been explicitly requested
  • Maintain awareness of their proximity to others during breakout sessions

The following behaviors are not aligned with R5 Summit values:

  • Advocating loudly for a specific text editor in a mixed-editor environment
  • Beginning a question with a statement longer than the session itself
  • Distributing competing frameworks without prior notice to session organizers
  • Claiming a Birds of a Feather session outcome as an official R5 position
  • Excessive certainty about what migration means in a post-migration context
  • Starting a side conversation during a keynote that is louder than the keynote
  • Using the term "simple fix" in any engineering discussion
  • Interrupting another attendee's standup to suggest the format be eliminated

Reporting

Conduct concerns may be directed to any member of the R5 Summit Organizing Committee, identifiable by their lanyards. Reports will be reviewed by a subcommittee whose composition will be determined following the report submission. Response timelines are dependent on committee availability and the nature of the concern.

Wi-Fi Access

High-speed conference Wi-Fi is available throughout all R5 Summit venues. In keeping with our philosophy of adaptive resilience, the Wi-Fi password is rotated every four hours to encourage adaptability.

Calculating rotation...

Why does the password rotate?

Credential rotation is a core practice in secure environments. We've extended this principle to our attendee Wi-Fi as a gentle reminder that adaptability is a professional competency. Password updates will be announced on digital signage throughout the venue.

Note: If you are unable to connect after a password rotation, this is intentional. Please use the downtime to engage in an unstructured hallway conversation. Cellular data is also available and not subject to rotation.
